The statutory scheme that assigns points to your insurance will allow one speeding ticket of 10 mph or less as long as no other points have been assessed in the last 3 years. This means if you've been caught speeding for the first time, or not in a long time, you may be a good candidate to try to negotiate a 9mph over reduction with the District Attorney. The DA's incentive to do this is to avoid clogging up calendars with speeding ticket trials. Another option, if you've recently had a ticket, would be to ask a judge for a Prayer for Judgement. This options suspends the judgment and you can pay court costs, but will have no fine or points at all. However, PJC's are only good against insurance points once every three years per household. PJC's are also limited for DMV points avoidance.
